Is Your Baby Too Hot, Too Cold, or Just Right at Night?

If you've ever found yourself staring at the baby monitor wondering, “Is she sweating? Should I add socks? Take off the sleep sack?”—you’re not alone.

Dressing your baby for sleep can feel like a nightly guessing game, especially with changing seasons.

The truth is, what your baby wears to bed matters more than you think. Temperature regulation is still developing in the early months, and overheating is a known risk factor for disrupted sleep and even SIDS.

At My Baby Sleep Consultant, we help parents simplify sleep from head to toe—including exactly what to dress baby in for every weather change.

I’ll Cover:

Why Sleepwear Matters for Baby Sleep

Your baby’s sleep environment—including what they wear—plays a big role in how well they rest. Unlike adults, babies can’t kick off the covers or say, “I’m too hot!”

Choosing the right sleepwear helps:

  • Regulate body temperature

  • Prevent overheating or chill-induced wake-ups

  • Reduce the need for extra blankets (which aren’t safe for young babies)

  • Signal sleep time through routine and consistency

Seasonal Guide to Baby Sleepwear

Here’s how to dress your baby for sleep year-round, using layers and TOG ratings (thermal overall grade).

Spring

Temperatures can swing quickly.

  • Sleepwear: Short or long-sleeve cotton onesie + lightweight 1.0 TOG sleep sack

  • Room temp: Aim for 68–72°F (20–22°C)

  • Tip: Use footed pajamas if feet feel cold, but avoid hats indoors

Summer

Overheating is more common—less is more.

  • Sleepwear: Sleeveless bodysuit or just a diaper + 0.2–0.5 TOG sleep sack (or none if room is warm)

  • Room temp: 68–74°F (20–23°C)

  • Tip: Look for bamboo or organic cotton fabrics that breathe well

Fall

Time to bring back the layers.

  • Sleepwear: Long-sleeve cotton footie + 1.0–2.5 TOG sleep sack depending on temperature

  • Room temp: 68–72°F (20–22°C)

  • Tip: Add a light swaddle if under 8 weeks old (and not rolling)

Winter

Stay warm, but don’t over-bundle.

  • Sleepwear: Thermal or fleece footed sleeper + 2.5 TOG sleep sack

  • Room temp: 65–70°F (18–21°C)

  • Tip: Avoid space heaters near the crib—layer clothing instead

Understanding TOG Ratings for Baby Sleepwear

TOG = Thermal Overall Grade—a measure of how warm a fabric keeps your baby.

  • 0.2 TOG: Super lightweight (summer naps)

  • 0.5 TOG: Light cotton (warmer homes or layering)

  • 1.0 TOG: Midweight cotton or muslin (spring/fall)

  • 2.5 TOG: Fleece or quilted sack (winter or cool rooms)

Always check the TOG rating on your baby’s sleep sack or swaddle to avoid under- or over-dressing.

Swaddles, Sleep Sacks & Footies—What’s Best?

Newborns (0–2 months)

Use a snug swaddle to mimic the womb—look for breathable, stretchy fabric. Stop swaddling once baby starts showing signs of rolling.

Infants (2–6 months)

Transition to a sleeveless sleep sack with arm mobility to reduce SIDS risk and allow self-soothing.

Older babies (6–12 months+)

Stick with sleep sacks as blankets remain unsafe. Choose TOG based on room temp.

FAQs About Baby Sleepwear

How do I know if my baby is too hot or too cold? Feel the back of the neck or chest—not hands or feet. Sweaty? Too warm. Cool and pink? Just right.

Can I use blankets in the crib? Not under 12 months. Use sleep sacks instead to keep baby warm and safe.

Is fleece too hot for baby sleepwear? Fleece is fine in cold rooms but should be paired with a TOG-appropriate sack and monitored for overheating.

Should babies sleep in socks or hats? No hats. Socks are okay if feet are cold, but most footed PJs do the job.

Final Thoughts

What your baby wears to bed may seem like a small detail—but it can mean the difference between restless nights and sound sleep.

With the right layers, fabrics, and seasonal adjustments, your baby stays cozy, safe, and snoozing like a champ.
